6 Ways to Prepare for Your Boudoir Shoot (So You Can Actually Enjoy It)
If you’ve been thinking about booking a boudoir session – or you just booked one and now you’re low-key panicking – this post is for you.
First, let me say this: the nerves are normal. I’ve never had a client walk through my door completely calm. But I’ve also never had a client leave without saying some version of “I wish I had done this sooner.” That shift happens in the session, and a big part of what makes it happen is how you show up. Not your body. Not your size. How you show up – mentally, physically, prepared.
Here’s exactly how to do that.
Start drinking more water at least five to seven days before your session. This one sounds basic but it makes a real difference in how you feel and how your skin looks in photos.
Skin that’s well-hydrated photographs beautifully. It has a natural glow that no filter can fully replicate. On the flip side, dehydrated skin can look dull and feel uncomfortable, which is the last thing you want when you’re trying to feel your best.
You’re investing in this experience. Treat the prep like part of the investment.
This is the tip nobody talks about and everybody needs.
Shaving right before your session – even the night before – can leave your skin irritated, bumpy, and red. That irritation shows up in photos and it’s uncomfortable to deal with when you’re trying to feel confident and relaxed.
Three days out is the sweet spot. Your skin has time to calm down completely, any redness fades, and you’re still smooth enough that it matters. If you wax instead, two weeks out is ideal so any irritation is completely gone by shoot day.
If you prefer to come au naturel- GO FOR IT! This is a no judgement zone!
This one surprises people but hear me out.
Boudoir posing involves your body moving in ways it probably doesn’t on a regular Tuesday. Arching your back, extending your legs, shifting your weight, all of it feels so much more natural when your body is loose and warmed up.
You don’t need to become a yogi overnight. Even ten to fifteen minutes of stretching daily in the week leading up to your session makes a noticeable difference. Focus on your back, hips, and legs. You’ll feel more comfortable on set, move more fluidly, and your poses will look effortless instead of stiff.

Beyond hydrating from the inside, show your skin some love from the outside too.
Exfoliate two to three days before your session to slough off any dry or dull skin. Follow up with a good moisturizer daily leading up to your shoot.
Avoid trying anything new on your skin the week of your session. New products, new facials, new anything can cause unexpected reactions and the last thing you want is to be dealing with a breakout or irritation on shoot day.
This might sound like a small thing but it is not a small thing.
Music is mood. The way you feel walking into your session sets the tone for everything that follows, and a playlist you’ve been listening to all week that makes you feel like that girl? It works.
Start building it now. Think about the songs that make you stand a little taller, walk a little slower, feel a little untouchable. R&B, hip hop, pop, throwbacks, whatever it is for you – no judgment. Some of my clients send me their playlist ahead of time and we actually play it during the session. If that’s you, send it over.
Please do not show up to your session running on coffee and nerves.
A real meal before your shoot gives you energy, keeps your blood sugar stable, and honestly just helps you feel like a human being. Anxious energy on an empty stomach is a real thing and it shows. You don’t need to eat anything fancy – just something that actually fuels you.
Avoid anything that makes you feel bloated or uncomfortable (you know your body), and skip the heavy alcohol the night before for the same reason. Show up feeling good in your body and everything else becomes easier.
If you’ve been reading this and feeling something – that little pull that says maybe this is for me – listen to it.
